What is search intent?
Search intent (also called user intent) is the underlying goal a person has when they type a query into Google. It answers one deceptively simple question: what does this searcher actually want to achieve?
Google’s algorithm has become extraordinarily good at detecting intent — and it ranks pages that satisfy that intent, not merely pages that contain the right keyword. As of 2026, intent-matching is the dominant ranking signal above backlinks and technical SEO for most queries.
Key insight: You can have perfect on-page optimisation and thousands of backlinks — but if your content mismatches what the user wants, you won’t rank. Intent is the gate everything else must pass through.

The 4 types of search intent
Every query falls into one of four primary categories. Identifying the right one is your first and most important decision before writing a single word of content.
Informational
“How does X work”, “What is Y” — the user wants to learn something.
Navigational
“Facebook login”, “Spotify app” — looking for a specific destination.
Commercial
“Best CRM 2026”, “iPhone vs Samsung” — researching before a decision.
Transactional
“Buy running shoes”, “Download X free” — ready to act now.
How to analyse intent for any keyword
The fastest method: search the keyword yourself and study the top 10 results. What content type dominates? Blog posts, product pages, listicles, videos? That pattern is Google telling you what satisfies this intent.
Apply the 3 C’s framework: identify the content type (blog, landing page, video), content format (how-to, listicle, guide, comparison), and content angle (the hook — beginner-friendly, data-driven, fastest method). Miss any one of these and you’ll be outranked by a competitor who nails all three.
